Poppele Participates

[ENGLISH] In summer 2025, the Kiezlabor mobile participation lab transformed Poppele-Platz in Berlin-Reinickendorf into a collaborative space for imagining the future of the neighborhood. In partnership with the local district office, schools, and CityLAB Berlin, I co-designed and facilitated site-specific workshops that combined social-spatial analysis, artistic research, and playful co-creation.

Named after a mythical figure from the volcanic landscapes of the Hegau, Poppele-Platz became the setting for exploring local needs and desires. Through participatory formats such as a trash collection game, workshops for building modular mobile furniture (Rolly-Pops, co-developed with OUTRA Studio), AI-generated visual Kiez Visions, and the artistic wish-banner dialogue Wünsche-Wimpel, we gathered input for the square’s redesign. The lab also hosted a mobile citizen office, edible city walks, cooking sessions, and the prototyping of playful public space interventions.

This collaborative process laid the groundwork for a more inclusive and future-oriented transformation of the square — driven by the everyday knowledge and creative imagination of local residents.

[DEUTSCH] Im Sommer 2025 wurde das mobile Beteiligungsprojekt Kiezlabor auf dem Poppele-Platz in Reinickendorf zum offenen Zukunftslabor. In Kooperation mit dem Quartiersmanagement, lokalen Schulen und dem CityLAB Berlin begleitete ich die Entwicklung und Umsetzung ortsspezifischer Formate, die soziale, ökologische und gestalterische Fragen miteinander verknüpften.

Der Poppele-Platz – benannt nach einer mystischen Gestalt aus dem Hegau – wurde dabei nicht nur als öffentlicher Raum, sondern als Verhandlungsraum lebendiger Zukunftsbilder gelesen. In spielerischen Formaten wie dem Müllsammel-Game, Workshopserien zu mobilen Stadtmöbeln (Rolly-Pops in Zusammenarbeit mit OUTRA Studio), dem Format Wünsche-Wimpel oder einer KI-basierten Visionswerkstatt (Kiezvisionen) sammelten wir Bedürfnisse, Ideen und Konflikte aus der Nachbarschaft. Zusätzlich lud das Kiezlabor mit Stadtspaziergängen, Kochaktionen, einem mobilen Bürgeramt und der Ausstellung erster Prototypen zum Austausch ein.

Der gesamte Prozess diente der Vorbereitung einer geplanten Umgestaltung des Platzes und legte Grundlagen für eine zukunftsfähige, sozial gerechte Platzentwicklung – mit Perspektiven von Kindern, Jugendlichen und Anwohnenden.
