Art Living Lab to Repair the Land

I serve on the advisory board of Art Living Lab – To Repair the Land, a European initiative exploring how artistic practice can contribute to ecological repair and territorial transformation.

The project brings together artists, mediators, researchers, and local communities to experiment with living lab methodologies in landscapes shaped by industrial and economic change. Rather than treating these territories only as damaged environments, the initiative approaches them as sites for collective learning, imagination, and regeneration.

Three pilot regions form the core of the project:

• Barruelo de Santullán (Spain): addressing the legacy of coal mining
• Wietstock (Germany): exploring the ecological pressures of industrial agriculture
• Šibenik (Croatia): responding to the impacts of mass tourism on coastal ecosystems

Across these sites, the Art Living Lab investigates how participatory art, cultural practice, and local knowledge can open new pathways for repairing relationships between people, land, and ecosystems.

The project forms part of a growing European conversation about how cultural practices can contribute to ecological transition and post-extractive futures.

Art Living Lab to Repair the Land

Ich bin Teil des Beirats von Art Living Lab – To Repair the Land, einer europäischen Initiative, die untersucht, wie künstlerische Praxis zur ökologischen Reparatur und zur Transformation von Landschaften beitragen kann.

Das Projekt bringt Künstler:innen, Vermittler:innen, Forscher:innen und lokale Communities zusammen, um mit Living-Lab-Methoden in Regionen zu arbeiten, die stark von industriellen und wirtschaftlichen Veränderungen geprägt sind. Anstatt diese Orte ausschließlich als „geschädigte Landschaften“ zu betrachten, versteht das Projekt sie als Räume für gemeinsames Lernen, neue Imaginationen und regenerative Praktiken.

Drei Pilotregionen bilden den Kern des Projekts:

• Barruelo de Santullán (Spanien): geprägt vom Erbe des Kohlebergbaus
• Wietstock (Deutschland): im Spannungsfeld industrieller Landwirtschaft
• Šibenik (Kroatien): betroffen von den ökologischen Folgen des Massentourismus

An diesen Orten untersucht das Art Living Lab, wie partizipative Kunst, kulturelle Praktiken und lokales Wissen neue Wege eröffnen können, um Beziehungen zwischen Menschen, Landschaften und Ökosystemen zu reparieren.

Das Projekt ist Teil einer wachsenden europäischen Diskussion darüber, welche Rolle kulturelle Praktiken für ökologische Transformationen und post-extraktive Zukunftsentwürfe spielen können.
